New York, NY – It has been released by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) that on March 3, 2013, price increases for subway and bus fares will be coming into effect.

The prices will be as follows for single-fare:

  • The Subway/Bus fare sees a 25-cent increase, from $2.25 to $2.50 Reduced fare is marked at $1.25.
  • The Express bus lines are marked at $6, and the reduced fare of $3 will apply for off-peak hours.

For weekly and monthly cards:

  • The 7-Day Unlimited Pass goes from $29 to $30.
  • The 7-Day Unlimited Express Bus Plus is marked at $55
  • The Monthly Unlimited MetroCard will go from $104 to $112.

Also, MetroCard bonuses kick in at $5, but would be reduced from 7% to 5%.

Meanwhile, the MetroNorth and Long Island Railroad (LIRR) systems, which are the express train lines by the MTA for Westchester and Long Island, respectively, will also be implementing hikes. The following statement has been released through the MTA website:

The (MTA) Board’s vote (sic) approves a fare increase that will take place on or about March 1. The final proposed fare increase was amended from initial proposals announced in October as a result of comments received from the public during a six-week public review process that included eight public hearings and four video sessions.

Railroad ticket prices will continue to vary based on the distance traveled, time of day traveling (off-peak or peak) and the type of ticket purchased (monthly, weekly, 10-trip, or one-way). On average, most tickets will increase by 8.19% to 9.31%, although depending on ticket type and zone, percentage increases may vary.

The discounted City Ticket, good for weekend transportation on the LIRR between Manhattan and Queens or between Brooklyn and Queens, will increase to $4.00 from $3.75.

The LIRR will establish discounts for military personnel on active duty and will extend to the evening peak period the Family Fare discount for children traveling with parents or guardians.
