DramaBox – Is This Really How We Watch TV Now?

If you’re anything like me, or the many millions who use social media on a daily basis, there is a great chance that you’ve run into certain ads or content that leads to downloading certain apps. These apps could be games, other social media platforms, or published content.

By accident, I stumbled upon one of these short drama videos from DramaBox.
Jeez, what the heck is DramaBox?

I started with a show called Underlying Dawn: The Rising Ruler. I didn’t know this was the entry point into a rabbit hole…

Cue these very dapper and fancily dressed Chinese tycoons, arguing about the legitimacy of this young man who, during the day, looks like an Amazon driver, but as it turns out he is actually this uber-powerful rich guy called Lord Cloud.

I honestly still don’t know what the hell I just watched, but they are freaking addictive. (And yes, this is absolutely my new guilty pleasure – watching these short minute to maybe minute and a half at the most clips that cater to my ADD.)

But why am I, along with what seems to be hundreds of others (as I check Reddit on ways to find these videos for free instead of having to “earn a token” by watching 5 gazillion ads, versus actually paying for these tokens so that I can binge-watch the whole series) so enamored by these fictional stories?

Is it actually because of the stories? Is it because I’m a simple paycheck-to-paycheck dude who wishes I had this kind of wealth and power? Is it their power suits, the attractive women they interact with, and the exaggerated boasting of who has the greatest and wealthiest family in the land? (The BDE in these shows is hilarious.)

Or is it because somehow, the internet and Google’s algorithm has just determined that I’m a sucker for this stuff? And I didn’t even know! I had no clue I liked Asian dramas.

Also — who is this dude? He’s kind of a good actor. We’re talking like, “Days of Our Lives” kind of good. But (better in my opinion because, you know), Asian.

Yeah. I’m definitely their target audience, I guess.

DramaBox itself is a very interesting app. It has some really off-the-wall and hilarious categories, ranging from, well, Drama, to “Revenge and Comeback,” and “Urban Legend” apart from their Exclusive Originals.

Revenge and Comeback is a heck of a category. Who wouldn’t want to be inspired? We who go through the doldrums of everyday life, through DramaBox, can now live vicariously through people who dress up like bosses with fictional special limited edition credit cards and whose last names are Baxter, Zink and Finley!

I tried looking for more information about DramaBox – what is their valuation? Who owns them? I didn’t find much, but apparently, they are owned by a Singaporean company called STORYMATRIX PTE., LTD.

Whoever you guys are, thank you for this insane app that makes me question everything about my own media consumption in this new world of nonlinear programming.

Dear lord, what is happening to me?
