Queens, NY – The Filipino community in New York, New Jersey and neighboring states in the northeast will witness a special gathering of Filipino talents and artists in the United States through the 1st Pinoy Pride sa America fashion, arts & musical event on Friday, October 4, 2013.  The phenomenal Aegis Band from the Philippines, the voice and music behind chart-topping songs like “Luha,” “Basang-basa sa Ulan,” and “Halik” is the main highlight of the event through a full concert in Club LaBoom, a popular party place in Woodside, New York.  Woodside is known as the “little Manila” of New York, home to thousands of Filipino immigrants.

The band, currently on tour in Europe, Canada, and the United States, will perform alongside with New York’s FilHarmonic Band, Tony Gado and Sheldon Magbanua. Organized by Pinoy Pride sa America Inc. and co-presented by Century Properties Group, one of the leading real estate companies in the Philippines, the event is a product of collaboration among Filipino community leaders and non-profit organizations which brings to the public an uncommon display of Filipino talents through a 3-in-1 show (fashion show, photo exhibit, & concert). The group aims to organize events that will support non-profit organizations in New York and the tri-State area. The maiden event this year seeks to support Gawad Kalinga USA for the construction of a multi-purpose facility in flood-affected Mindanao.  In addition, the event will support a supplemental feeding program that will be organized in Baroy, Lanao del Norte in Mindanao later this year to help combat malnutrition among school children.

JCI Philippine-New York (Jaycees) produces the fashion show segment and will feature the works of Filipino fashion designers Darius Gibbs and Anna Puruganan. Gibbs, a successful designer from New Jersey is the creator and designer of DBG Apparel, the makers of Dark by DBG. As a young Filipino designer, Puruganan, is very proud of her Filipino heritage. In 2012, Puruganan showcased a collection inspired by costumes of the Cordillera tribe in a fashion show in the Philippine Consulate in New York.

“This will be an unforgettable night for many Filipinos. This is a great venue for our kababayans to come together and see a showcase of pure Pinoy talent. We are excited that a lot of organizations are joining us and have expressed interest in becoming part of Pinoy Pride sa America,” said Rena Avendula, CEO and co-founder of Pinoy Pride sa America, Inc.

“Our aim is to unite Filipinos in America through events that support Filipino artistry,” she added.

The event will also honor Filipino icons and achievers in public service and the arts. The Pinoy Pride sa America Award for Public Service will be conveyed to philanthropist and community leader, Ms. Loida Nicholas Lewis for her significant contribution to the Filipino community in the United States in the field of community service. The Pinoy Pride sa America Award for Visual Arts will be given to artists Sheila May Advento and Ernest Concepcion. A posthumous award will be received by the family of the late Ernie Pena, an outstanding photographer in New York.

Works of Filipino photographers will be displayed in a special photo exhibit in the Pinoy Pride sa America gallery.  Photographers Rex Romero, Gerson Abesamis, May Coscolluela, E.G. Asehan, and Gretchen Pangilinan will showcase their personal favorites. The public may purchase photos from the gallery and support a charity chosen by the photographers.
