New York City Gets ICANN Approval for .nyc Domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) had previously began the process of accepting and approving applications for new top-level domains (TLDs), and some of these submissions could be seen by mid 2013.

Among those who have filed for an application were New York City officials, and Mayor Bloomberg himself has spoken to the economic positives a city domain can impact local businesses and residents.

“Having our own unique, top-level domain — .nyc — puts New York City at the forefront of the digital landscape and creates new opportunities for our small businesses,” said Mayor Bloomberg through a statement. “They’ll now be able to identify themselves as connected to New York City, one of the world’s strongest and most prestigious brands.”

Alex Fitzpatrick (Mashable.com) reported in Febuary that about 2,000 organizations applied for 1,400 top-level domains, and ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade told te Associated Press that the first of these new domains will start appearing online, among of which will be a new .nyc domain for New York City.

The price for an application with ICANN? The city, for instance, had to shell out a one-time fee of $185,000 to acquire the domain rights, and it would also have to pay an annual sum of $25,000 to retain control of the .nyc TLD.

But as for how much it would be for New Yorkers to register for a .nyc domain, it remains to be seen what the damage will be.
