A Primer on the Highly Anticipated Microsoft Tablet: The Surface Tab

Dubbed as the iPad killer, a sexy and sleek tablet referred to as the ‘SURFACE’ has caught the attention of many gadget aficionados. Boasting cutaway edges, magnesium chassis, Clear Type high-definition display, and vapor deposition coating, what’s not to love about the Surface Tab? Perhaps, the best asset of this lovely piece of hardware is its very impressive and well-thought of design. In addition to that, it is very light and comfortable to hold – so can you ask for more? But before you go online and pre-order this baby, take time to read below and know if it is really the gadget for you.

Weight and Screen Size

Microsoft’s Surface Tab comes with a 10.6” screen complimented with a 16:9 wide-angle high-definition display. Measuring 9.3mm (Surface Windows RT) and 13.5mm (Surface Windows 8 Pro), respectively, its thin frame totally rocks! Its screen is optically bonded and enclosed with Gorilla Glass 2 for added durability. Its casing, meanwhile, is made from magnesium alloy, which is present on the tab’s inside and outside surfaces.

Aside from having a light-weight and really durable cover, the surface tab is also equipped with a fashionable kick stand that users can conveniently click in and out on the tablet.  Both the Surface Windows RT and Surface Windows 8 Pro come with two USB ports, a feature rarely seen in other tablets sold in the market today.

Hardware and OS

The Surface tablet, as mentioned earlier, is available in two versions. One runs on Windows RT while the other runs on Window 8 Pro. The RT version of the surface tab features 32 GB and 64 GB storage, while the Windows 8 Pro version comes with a 64 GB and 128 GB storage capacity.

Connectivity

Up until now, Microsoft has yet to mention about the 3G, 4G or LTE versions of the surface tab. Maybe partnership with mobile phone carriers are still under talks so all we can do for now is wait for further updates.

Battery Life

Surface tab running on Window RT has 31.5 watt-hours while the one running on Windows 8 Pro has 42.5 watt-hours. Not bad for a tab-cum-PC running on Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Accessories

Awesome accessories are also available for the surface tablet. One of which is the three millimeter thick cover that also functions as a keyboard. It is quite similar with iPad’s Smart Cover but the surface tab’s cover doesn’t bend unlike the one used for the iPad.

Microsoft’s Surface tablet will likely be priced anywhere around $500 – $800 and it won’t be available in the market until the end of November or early December of this year. But although consumers will have to wait a few more months to really experience what this tablet has to offer, many are already anticipating its official release to see if the Surface tablet would turn out to be iPad’s toughest competitor.
