AT&T to Customers: ‘Unless You Have an Unlimited Plan, No FaceTime for You’

That headline is essentially what AT&T said.

I got the news on my iPhone earlier (ironically enough), from our good friends at FreePress.net. They have also began circulating a petition online to spread the word, as this is not only an attack on net neutrality, but an injustice for a certain demographic – deaf and mute customers who use this Apple feature exclusively.

As FreePress puts it:

‘This is bad for every AT&T customer, including the deaf, immigrant families and others with relatives overseas, who depend on mobile video apps to communicate with friends and family. ‘

Arstechnica.com also confirms the report, saying that “AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value,” the company said on Friday afternoon. “With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.”

Jon Brodkin of Ars Technica also wrote on the subject, with how AT&T’s counterpart, Verizon, is taking advantage of their competition’s negative press:

With AT&T struggling to defend its decision to limit Apple’s FaceTime feature to certain types of cellular data plans, Verizon Wireless last night revealed that FaceTime will be included in all of its data plans for no extra charge.

“All Verizon Wireless customers will be permitted to use the data-intensive application with no additional charges, including those remaining on unlimited data plans, according to a company spokeswoman,” the Wall Street Journal reported. Verizon has confirmed to Ars that this is correct.
