A Meal at Nyonya

It is a funny name for Filipinos, I’m sure.

But Nyonya in Malaysia means “the ladies.” And if a lady can cook like this place can, it makes sense why it stays so busy, whatever time of day.

Hidden in Little Italy, this quiet haven of Malay and Chinese flavors has one of the more impressive menus in New York. It boasts of a pretty large menu, specified by protein and veggies. They also boast of an army of noodle selections. And, their seafood list is also something to admire.

I’ve been here a few times. And as every time that I came, I have eaten really well.

Fish, good. Beef, good. Crabs, oh, hell yes!

But, what keeps me coming back is their chicken.

More specifically, their Garlic Chicken.

It is the simplest of things, really. But everything is well-executed. Crispy-fried chicken, moist and flavorful. And the garlic broth that it sits on – Oh. My. God. The half size portion is pretty big. But it’s so good, anyone wouldn’t have a problem going for the whole thing.

And as it so happens, a small bowl or two of their coconut rice goes perfectly with it.

I was a happy man, me and my garlic chicken. Alternating between bites of white and dark meat. I shed away my chopsticks and grabbed a fork, this made a faster plate-to-mouth delivery.

So, if you find yourself in Little Italy, where every restaurant has one guy trying to lure you in to their place, maybe going to Nyonya might be a better option.

Unless you really want that pasta.
